River Falls small business show support for LGBT Pride with 1st ever “Queer Crawl”

RIVER FALLS, Wis. (WEAU) – Along Main Street in River Falls you will see some signs of Pride in this small Western Wisconsin City.

Bridget Faricy and Beau Fair are friends who got a couple dozen businesses around town in on the new show of support.

“River Falls doesn’t really have a huge pride presence. And we thought, well let’s just see if there’s any interest from local businesses and people in doing something,” said Faricy. “And, Beau came up with the idea of calling it the ‘Queer Crawl.’”

“That’s a great idea, but that will never happen in River Falls. We are such a small Wisconsin town, there’s no way there will ever be a pride event that size in River Falls. I was like well, did you even try?” said Fair.

The two went ahead anyways, and with only the past couple of months to put the “Queer Crawl” together.

Businesses from book stores, to food market co-ops and even a fishing supply store wanted to show everyone is welcome.

“We actually have had a lot more businesses go ahead and offer incentives. Like there’s an antique store down the street that has beautiful rainbow pencils that you can pick up down the street,” said Faricy.

Fair comes from the small town of St. Michael Minnesota, and said having Pride events in small towns matter.

“That part of town is not really queer accepting either. And, coming to River Falls, we are a cute little town but its more hush hush about those issues. And I’ve experience some discrimination on campus as well from a few other people,” said Fair.

It may not be a parade or a big party line in the Twin Cities or even up stream in Hudson, but getting small businesses in a small city together to show support is a start.

“Just start talking about it, because that’s how make start making real change,” said Fair.

Around 50 businesses in the St. Croix Valley in total are offering discounts.

There is a button stores have that show you are a part of the crawl, and some stores will even offer deals if you mention the “Queer Crawl.”
